Hadith of the Week - Greetings

A man asked the Prophet (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam), "What Islamic traits are the best?" The Prophet (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) replied, "Feed the people, and greet those whom you know and those whom you do not know." [Bukhari]

One of the minor signs of the Day of Judgement is that people will only give salaam to the people that they know. [Ahmad] Nowadays we see that salaam is not considered the right of every Muslim. It used to be that salaam was given to any Muslim, whether one knew them or not. In fact, if you offer salaams to strangers today they might look at you funny, trying to figure out if they know you. Nevertheless, let us make an effort to revive this sunnah for the love of the Prophet (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) and as a practice of one of the best traits of Islam.

Hadith of the Week - How do you smell?

Rasul Allah (sal Allahu alayhi wasallam) said: "The example of a good companion and a bad one is the bearer of musk and the worker on the fires. A bearer of musk would give you some, you might buy some from him, or you might enjoy the fragrance of his musk. The worker on the fires, on the other hand, might spoil your clothes with sparks from his bellows, or you get a bad smell from him." [Sahih Bukhari]

Who are the top 5 people you hang out with? List them. Now look at their qualities and you'll notice that you are a product of the sum of them. Do they have the outstanding qualities that you seek? If not, then it's time to find some bearers of musk that you can truly smell great from.

Hadith of the Week - Speaking During the Friday Khutbah

The Prophet (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) said: "When the imam is giving the khutbah on Friday, and you tell your companion 'Listen,' you have made an impertinent remark." [Sahih Bukhari]

“It is offensive to speak during the sermon on Friday, whether it be to say "Subhan Allah," the Blessings on the Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace), or to command the right or forbid the wrong. The reason for this prohibition is that listening to the Friday prayer sermon is obligatory, as it takes the place of two of the rakahs of the noon prayer, so things offensive during the prayer are offensive while listening to the sermon.” [Umdat us Salik/ Reliance of the Traveller, by Ahmad ibn Naqib al-Misri]

Semester break IFLA Arabic Class

Last night all the test results were given out as well as the transcript. Oh well, Alhamdulillah (Praise be to Allah) I passed the test (of course I won't tell the marks). So, we'll be heading for a semester break and the class will resume on 26.10 week. IFLA has come up with a new level i.e. level 4, which suppose to cover the other half of the level 3 syllabus but we are given the option either to continue to level 4 or go on to Communication Arabic (Bahasa Arab Komunikasi). Previously, there were supposed to be only 3 levels before going into Communication Arabic (CB). There was unrest among the students as there were only told last night about it. Oh well, personally I don't mind going through another level as I'm taking this class for the sake of knowledge and self improvement. But it is not fair for those who have been promised that they only have to go through 3 levels before going into CB. At the end, they are allowed to go straight to CB as long as they passed level 3. Ok, case closed.

Hadith of the Week - Houses on Bridges?

Rasul Allah (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) said: “Be in this world as if you were a stranger or a traveler.” [Bukhari]

The above narration clearly indicates that we are in this world for a purpose and not for entertainment. We are like travelers during this life on earth. A traveler has a final destination that he/she is eager to reach. They need to use the time of their stop-over wisely, so as not to miss their connecting flight.

We should remember that earth is not our final destination. We have been encouraged to utilize the blessings Allah has put here for our use, yet we are told not to lose sight of the temporary nature of this life, and to use it to make preparations for the next life. Our souls are on a journey. Remembering death defeats joy. It kills our tastebuds for the pleasures of this life. But it is the only wise thing to do, in our own interest.

Concerning the life of this world Hazrat Esa (alaihis salaam) said, "This world is like a bridge, cross it and do not build on it."  This life is a bridge from our previous existence as soul to our next existence in the grave, then on the Day of Judgement, then either in The Garden or (Allah Forbid) The Fire. Houses are built on land, connected by bridges where the need arises. The most appropriate place to build, the focus of our attention, should be the land that we will set foot on once we cross the bridge that is our earthly existence. Where are you focused on building? On land, or on a delicate bridge that can collapse anytime with your death?

Final class for Level 3

Last night was the last class before the final exam for the IFLA Level 3 Arabic program. The exam will be on Monday, a day after my 3 days outstation trip. We did a little revision or مراجعة in that 2 hour class. Still have to do it on my own. Hopefully I will manage to squeeze the time for revision. It has been long time since the last time I sat for examination. Let me think, yes... it was 2003... 6 years ago. Hahahahaha.. Better start now.

All the best to myself.
